Sudan’s Peace Initiative Receives Strong Backing from African Union

The African Union Commission has expressed strong support for Sudan’s recently presented peace initiative, calling it a comprehensive framework that demonstrates a deep understanding of the ongoing crisis in the country. Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Yusuf praised the plan for its commitment to ending hostilities, halting violence, easing humanitarian suffering, and safeguarding Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.

Yusuf highlighted that the initiative addresses political, humanitarian, and security dimensions, providing a solid foundation for sustainable peace. He stressed that constructive engagement with the framework is crucial for achieving a cessation of conflict, restoring stability, and protecting national cohesion across Sudan.

Key elements of the initiative, according to Yusuf, include an immediate ceasefire, civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access, support for refugees and internally displaced persons, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation, and reconstruction. He emphasized that these measures are critical for rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric, and ensuring a united Sudanese state.

The AU Chairperson further underscored the necessity of transitional justice, reparations for victims, broad political participation, and national reconciliation as pillars for lasting peace. He reiterated the AU’s commitment to Sudanese-led dialogue, democratic elections under international supervision, and close coordination with the UN, Arab League, IGAD, and other partners to secure stability, unity, and regional peace.
