Sudan Turns to Egypt’s El Sewedy Group After Massive Power Infrastructure Losses

The Sudanese government has sounded the alarm over the scale of damage to its power grid, with Energy Minister Al-Mutassim Ibrahim reporting that more than 60,000 transformers have been lost nationwide since the conflict began — including over 14,000 in Khartoum State alone. The minister blamed the looting on Rapid Support Forces militias.

In Cairo, Ibrahim met with El Sewedy Group Chairman Ahmed El Sewedy and Board Chairman Walid El-Deeb, pressing them to speed up restoration of local transformer manufacturing. He highlighted Sudan’s long-standing partnership with Egypt, noting that El Sewedy’s investments are vital for reconstruction at a time of widespread infrastructure collapse.

Company officials confirmed their readiness to supply the transformers Sudan urgently needs. Walid El-Deeb said rehabilitation of the firm’s Sudan factory is already in progress, with production expected to resume soon, focusing on repairing damaged distribution transformers and stabilizing the national grid.
