Khartoum’s Crackdown Triggers Juba Backlash

Joint Sudanese forces have intensified raids on undocumented foreigners, detaining individuals in areas like Salha near Omdurman. Thousands of South Sudanese were deported for lacking permits.

The moves sparked sharp commentary in Juba, where some urged cutting ties with Khartoum. Critics framed the deportations as harsh, especially for people born and raised in Sudan.

Sudanese voices counter that many remaining foreigners are undocumented and some joined militias. Doshka says South Sudan enforces similar rules and knew its citizens’ status.

Dr. Hanafi says sensitivities will persist but a major diplomatic crisis is unlikely. He calls the sweep a sovereign legal measure that Sudan will not reverse.
