Khartoum Fuel Shortage Pushes Black Market to Record Highs

Fuel stations in Omdurman and across Khartoum State have largely shut down over the past 48 hours, leaving drivers stranded in a worsening fuel crisis.

Throughout last week, long queues formed at filling stations, but motorists were met with empty pumps. Only limited stations serving government vehicles under strict rationing remained operational.

Frustrated drivers told Darfur24 that black-market prices have soared, with a gallon now costing between 40,000 and 50,000 Sudanese pounds—nearly three times the official rate of 17,000 SDG.

One public transport driver said he refused to buy fuel at 50,000 SDG, arguing that the price would make it impossible to cover costs since passengers cannot afford higher fares. Others described fruitless trips across Khartoum and Bahri in search of supplies.

Still, some drivers said they had no choice but to pay inflated rates, with one explaining that he purchased a gallon for 40,000 SDG to avoid disappointing regular customers.

The shortage has paralyzed much of the capital’s transport sector, deepening economic hardships already facing residents.
