China Moves to Write Off USD 45 Million of Sudan’s Outstanding Debt

China has announced plans to cancel a portion of Sudan’s debt amounting to approximately USD 45 million, following high-level discussions held on Wednesday in Port Sudan between Sudanese officials and representatives of the Chinese Embassy. The talks focused on a draft Memorandum of Understanding addressing Sudan’s financial obligations to Beijing.

During the meeting between Mohamed Bashar, Undersecretary for Planning at Sudan’s Ministry of Finance, and Xu Jian, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, it was confirmed that 345 million Chinese yuan would be written off. The cancelled amount relates to interest-free loans previously extended by China to support a range of development initiatives in Sudan.

Officials also reviewed progress on the implementation of an earlier Chinese grant worth 200 million yuan, which was allocated to infrastructure projects in key sectors, including water supply, agriculture, and electricity. The discussions assessed how these funds are being utilized and their impact on essential services.

Mohamed Bashar welcomed China’s continued support, highlighting its role in strengthening Sudan’s economy and infrastructure, particularly in energy, water, and agriculture. Xu Jian, meanwhile, reiterated China’s commitment to further assistance, confirming plans to channel additional support through UN agencies for solar-powered drinking water projects in Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Sennar, and Blue Nile states.
