Manchester United reportedly weighed the idea of bringing back club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a temporary basis before appointing Ruben Amorim as manager in November 2024.
United’s managerial carousel has been relentless in the past decade, with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer, and Erik ten Hag all failing to restore the club’s former dominance. Ten Hag initially impressed by winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons, but poor league form and a damaging defeat to West Ham in October 2024 ultimately cost him his job.
The club turned to highly rated Portuguese coach Amorim, yet his reign has so far disappointed. Despite flashes of promise, results have been underwhelming, and last weekend’s defeat to Brentford has only deepened concerns among supporters who are already questioning whether he is the right man for the job.
According to The Sun, United briefly considered reinstalling Solskjaer after Ten Hag’s dismissal, especially if Amorim proved unattainable. The Norwegian enjoyed a remarkable spell as interim boss in 2018-19, famously masterminding United’s comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. His early success earned him the job full-time, leading United to third and second in successive Premier League campaigns, before he was dismissed in November 2021 following a 4-1 defeat to Watford.
While the idea of his return ultimately faded, the revelation underscores the instability surrounding United’s managerial appointments — and the sense among fans that the search for a long-term solution remains ongoing.
